Our 2022 Keynote Speaker Was:

Paul Carrol Binkley has been playing the guitar and composing his own music since he was nine years old. He trained at Berklee College of Music in Boston (Jim Hall Jazz Award), Austin Peay State University, and Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt. His solo recordings have received national recognition on such broadcasts as “Music from the Hearts of Space” and NPR’s “All Things Considered” and he has performed his original music worldwide from the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville to the Singapore Jazz Festival. Mr. Binkley has also performed and recorded in a wide range of musical styles for a diverse group of artists including Percy Sledge, The Fifth Dimension, Lorrie Morgan, Jim Nabors, Nashville Opera, Nashville Jazz Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, Modern Jazz Tuba Project, Cosmic Jazz Faculty, Conversation, Nexus Chamber Orchestra, Marty Raybon, Lari White, Mandy Barnett, Maria Muldaur, Janie Fricke, Holly Dunn, T.G. Sheppard, Carrie Tillis, the McCarters, and spent five years performing with country super group Alabama, including the “American Farewell Tour”. He also worked with Jerry Lewis and Rupert Holmes during the world premiere production of Marvin Hamlisch’s last musical, The Nutty Professor and performed with the national tour of If/Then at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

Paul has music directed, sound designed and composed for over 30 years for theatre companies including Tennessee Repertory Theatre, Nashville Shakespeare Festival, Nashville Children’s Theatre, Vanderbilt University Theatre (Artist in Residence, 2011-2014), Iowa Theatre Artist Company, Mountain Playhouse, Coterie Theatre (Kansas City), Hudson Theatre (Hollywood), and Falcon Theatre (Burbank).  His original theatrical scores have accompanied many award winning plays in theatres across the country including the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, Alliance Theatre, Birmingham Children’s Theatre, and garnered Best Production in the United Solo Theatre Festival on Broadway.  Paul composed and arranged music for Scot Copeland’s The Wind in the Willows and Selkie: Between Land and Sea by Laurie Brooks (both published by Dramatic Publishing). His original musical Jack’s Tale (co-written by Scot Copeland) enjoyed it’s 2015 world premiere at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. to much critical acclaim, and his original musical If It Rains (co-written by Laurie Brooks) was featured in workshop at the New Plays for Young Audiences Festival (Provincetown Playhouse – NYU) in 2017. Paul has composed original underscoring for David Alford’s one-man performances of The Thanksgiving Visitor and A Christmas Memory (by Truman Capote), has performed the scores live with Mr. Alford since 1995, and will reprise the works beginning November 23rd at Belmont Mansion in Nashville, Tennessee (2022). He also created the original sound design and served as Musical Director for Alford’s Spirit: The Legend of the Bell Witch, and arranged and produced the music and original cast recording of Smoke: A Ballad of the Night Riders, both of which are performed annually in Adams, Tennessee. He served as Orchestrator and Conductor for the premiere performances of An Elegant Obsession (by George L. Mabry and Richard Gildrie) in the George and Sharon Mabry Concert Hall at Austin Peay State University in 2018. Most recently Paul composed an original score for Nashville Shakespeare Festival’s Summer production (2022) of Cymbeline, directed by Leah Lowe.  

Besides founding and running his own independent label, PCB Music, he serves as musicologist and copyright infringement consultant for several national clients including: Samsung, Google, Honda, Sprint, Target, EA Sports, and Apple.
